Intelligent Peripheral System 3000 (IPS 3000)

The Glimmerglass Intelligent Peripheral System 3000 (IPS 3000) is designed to work hand-in-hand with Glimmerglass Intelligent Optical Systems and other optical-layer networking equipment to create comprehensive solutions for managing your optical layer. The IPS 3000 supports optical amplification, optical splitting, and lossless optical signal distribution. The IPS 3000 is the industry’s most flexible, highest-density system for optical signal amplification and splitting. It provides 12 user slots for Peripheral Modules in a highly reliable and fully manageable 6-RU shelf.

The hot-swappable Peripheral Modules can support up to 24 EDFA amps or 192 splitters, or may be mixed and matched as required for your application in a single shelf. The IPS 3000 comes standard with a 16-slot chassis, an Alarms Module, a System Control Module (SCM) and a Fan Tray.

System Control Module

The IPS System Control Module provides the monitoring and control paths for all Peripheral Modules in an IPS 3000. LightFlow™ MS intelligent operating software embedded on the System Control Module provides external connectivity through three interfaces:

ClickManage™ – a web-based GUI optimized for ease of control and convenient viewing of all module settings and alarms.

TL1 – Full management and control of the IPS is available through TL1.

SNMP – Full management and control of the IPS is available through SNMPv3.

Lossless Splitter

While optical splitters allow for the duplication of optical signals without the need for optical-to-electrical conversion, even small, modest split counts can result in high optical loss. For example, a typical 1:4 split will result in a 7 dB loss, and a 1:8 split can result in an over 10 dB loss. For this reason, Glimmerglass has developed the Lossless Splitter, which integrates splitters and amplifiers to compensate for the associated loss all on the same module.

The IPS Lossless Splitter Module is a fully integrated solution, combining a 1:N splitter with an EDFA in a single IPS module. This means that up to 12 separate optical signals can be split and then amplified within a single 6RU IPS 3000 chassis. With convenient system software, Lossless Splitter Modules can be configured either to simply compensate for the associated splitter loss, or up to 6 dB additional. Alternatively, for environments where stable output power is important, the Lossless Splitter can be set to a Constant Output Power mode.

High-Density Splitter

The IPS High Density Splitter Module is designed for networks that require a large number of optical signals to be split. The IPS accepts a variety of passive splitter modules, from 12 1:2 splitters on a single module to one 1:16. With 12 High Density Splitter Modules in a 6RU chassis, the IPS 3000 can support 144 1:2 splitters.

Dual Optical Amplifier

The IPS Dual Optical Amplifier Module is designed for networks in which large numbers of single-wavelength-per-fiber signals must be amplified. As its name suggests, this module combines two independent EDFAs in a single module. Each EDFA can be individually configured as a pre-amp for use where low signal gain is most important, or configured as a booster amp for applications requiring the highest optical output power. With 12 Dual Optical Amplifier Modules in a 6RU chassis, the IPS 3000 can support 24 configurable EDFAs.

Case Study

Problem

A federal integrator with a government customer needed to connect geographically dispersed antenna sites to a central pool of monitoring equipment.

Our Solution

With Glimmerglass managing the reconfiguration of optical signals, the integrator was able to create an RF-over-fiber solution that performed better and cost less than traditional implementations.
