Every week, we see new headlines declaring that Optics is back. The emergence of a broad spectrum of applications in telecommunications, defense and selected other markets promises a very exciting future for optical switching.
The articles in this issue of the Newsletter of the New Optical Internet illustrate a small part of this broad spectrum.
We have seen growing interest in the use of Intelligent Optical Switches to reduce costs and improve productivity in telecom network integration and test. One example is the exciting work at Swisscom.
Optical switching is also beginning to find applications as part of wavelength switches for telecom core networks. This issue includes a discussion of the various meanings of “wavelength switch” and explores their roles in telecommunications networks.
Finally, we are seeing the re-emergence of the expressed need for large optical switches in DWDM telecommunications networks and Dynamic Fiber Mangement. The construction of large optical switches has been a goal of both startups and large companys for a decade. In this issue, we explain the various technical approaches and the associated trade-offs.
Reading these articles, you’ll begin or continue to understand why optical switching is part of your future – today.
