

At the recent WDM & Next Generation Optical Networking conference, Nortel presented further evidence for the need for the New Optical Internet. They projected that by 2009, 74 percent of the traffic load on a Tier 1 Core Central Office will be Video on Demand.
This bandwidth growth and heightened QOS requirements will require new, innovative architectures. Photonic Crossconnects are becoming an increasingly important part of these architectures.
The stars of Interop 2006 in Tokyo, the largest Internet show in Asia, were the multiple vendors demonstrating 40Gbit capability. In particular, NTT demonstrated the switching of 40Gb data streams using Glimmerglass Intelligent Optical Switches - moving toward the New Optical Internet.
